Two pivotal sets from the late 90s and 2000, often overshadowed by Base Set — even though they hold some of the most sought-after cards of the vintage era.
Everyone talks about Base Set. Yet Team Rocket (April 2000) and Neo Genesis (December 2000) hold cards that, for a savvy collector, often offer a more interesting rarity-to-price ratio.
Team Rocket: the “Dark” cards
Team Rocket introduced the “Dark” Pokémon concept (Dark Charizard, Dark Blastoise…) with a distinctive dark-background design. The set is also one of the first with a particularly low 1st Edition print ratio, which makes those copies noticeably more sought-after than on earlier sets with a comparable total print run.
Neo Genesis: generation 2 arrives
Neo Genesis marks the introduction of Johto (generation 2) Pokémon into the card game. The set’s undisputed centerpiece is Lugia, whose holo version remains one of the most in-demand cards of the entire Neo era, often compared to Charizard in terms of collector recognition.
Why these sets stay undervalued
Two main reasons:
- Less media nostalgia — Base Set gets disproportionate media coverage that keeps its price artificially high relative to its actual rarity.
- A less immediately recognizable visual identity to a casual buyer, which limits mainstream demand despite sometimes greater actual rarity.
A word of caution when buying
Because these sets get less media attention, sellers (and sometimes counterfeiters) bank on buyers not knowing their exact characteristics as well — the set symbol, the holo texture specific to that period.
