Grading has a real cost, a turnaround that can run into months, and a real risk of a disappointing result. Here’s how to decide objectively.
The basic math
Grading a card typically costs between CHF 20 and 150 depending on the service and turnaround tier, plus international shipping and insurance. For the process to pay off, the value gap between your ungraded card and its value at the likely resulting grade needs to clearly exceed that total cost.
Cards where grading really makes a difference
- Rare vintage cards (Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Neo) where the price gap between ungraded and PSA 9-10 is often substantial.
- Cards already in near-perfect condition, where a high grade is likely.
- Cards headed for resale, since a sealed case reassures a buyer far more than a raw card, even a well-described one.
Cards where grading rarely pays off
- Common or low-demand cards, even in perfect condition.
- Cards with an obvious visible flaw (a bent corner, a scratch) that will cap the grade regardless of the service chosen.
- Cards you plan to keep for yourself and handle regularly — a sealed case then trades collecting enjoyment for a hypothetical financial gain.
Value it before you decide
