Selling Your Collection: Card by Card, as a Lot, or Through an Expert?
Three selling strategies, three different trade-offs between time invested, price achieved, and simplicity. How to choose based on your collection.
Selling a Pokémon card collection raises a question that sounds simple, but whose answer depends entirely on what your collection is made of: sell card by card, sell as a lot, or go through an intermediary?
Selling card by card
Pros: maximum value for each individual piece, especially for rare cards whose per-unit value justifies the time invested.
Cons: considerable time spent photographing, describing, and managing each listing individually, especially for a large collection made mostly of common cards.
Selling as a lot
Pros: speed, a single transaction, ideal for offloading a large, mostly-common collection.
Cons: typically a lower price than the sum of individual sales, since the buyer factors in a margin for risk and the time needed to process the lot.
Going through an expert or intermediary
Pros: time saved, access to a potentially wider network of buyers, and a professional valuation that keeps you from unknowingly underselling a rare piece.
Cons: a commission on the sale, to weigh against the time and expertise saved.
The first step, whichever strategy you pick
Before choosing a selling strategy, it helps to know precisely what your collection is worth — and, more importantly, which pieces deserve an individual sale rather than being bundled into a lot. Our valuation service helps identify the cards that justify special treatment, so a rare piece doesn’t get sold cheap, buried inside a lot of common cards.
