First Edition vs Unlimited Cards: How to Tell Them Apart

On vintage sets, the “1st Edition” mark can multiply a card’s value by three, five, sometimes ten times. But first you need to identify it with certainty.
Where to look for the symbol
On applicable cards, the “1st Edition” symbol appears as a small circular stamp or printed mark on the left side of the artwork, below the Pokémon’s name depending on the set. Its exact position and style vary slightly from set to set — something we check systematically against known references.
Why this mark carries so much value
The first print runs of many vintage sets, Jungle in particular, were produced in far smaller quantities than the Unlimited runs that followed. That relative scarcity, combined with instant recognition of the symbol among collectors, explains a price gap that often exceeds simple supply-and-demand logic.
The trap of symbols added after the fact
Since the 1st Edition mark is such a key value driver, it’s unfortunately a favorite target for counterfeiters, who may try to add or alter this symbol on an authentic Unlimited card. Warning signs to watch for:
- ink on the symbol that looks slightly different from the rest of the card under close inspection,
- a symbol positioned incorrectly relative to known references for the set,
- print sharpness on the symbol that doesn’t match the rest of the card.
